Do I need an international driver’s license to rent a car in Ireland?

Most travelers from the U.S., Canada, UK, Australia, and EU countries can rent a car with a valid driver’s license in English without needing an International Driving Permit (IDP). An IDP is recommended only for visitors whose license is in a language other than English. Rental companies often have age restrictions—typically a minimum age of 25, with surcharges for drivers under 25 or over 70. It’s important to bring a credit card in the primary driver’s name for deposits, as well as to review insurance requirements; Ireland has unique car rental insurance policies, including the common but sometimes confusing “Collision Damage Waiver” (CDW).
